Brad Gallagher Offers Cybersecurity Guidance for Pharmacies in Specialty Pharmacy Continuum and Pharmacy Practice News Articles

Brad Gallagher, partner and co-leader of Barclay Damon’s Health Care Controversies Team, was featured in the Specialty Pharmacy Continuum article “Many Ways to Guard Against Cyberattacks” and in an article of the same title in its sister publication Pharmacy Practice News for his insights on pharmacy cybersecurity.

Speaking at the 2025 American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Annual Meeting & Exposition, Brad emphasized the urgent need for pharmacy leaders to prioritize cybersecurity in light of the recent Change Healthcare breach that affected millions of patients and disrupted pharmacy operations nationwide. “[A breach is] crushing to your reputation, particularly if you’re a smaller community pharmacy that serves half your town or more,” Brad said.

In the article, Brad outlined practical risk mitigation steps, including employee training, two-factor authentication, careful vetting of third-party vendors, and maintaining paper-based backups. He also highlighted the reputational and financial consequences of data breaches, particularly for smaller, community-based pharmacies. Brad advised, “Do your due diligence with all vendors,” and “have backup servers and paper backup policies and procedures in place.”

Brad serves on the National Association of Specialty Pharmacy Legal Committee and regularly advises clients on cybersecurity preparedness in the health care space.
