Lizz Acee Featured in Law360 Article on Legislation Passed in Connecticut in 2024

Lizz Acee, managing director of Barclay Damon’s major market offices and a partner in the firm’s Labor & Employment Practice Area, was featured in the Law360 article “Connecticut Legislation Passed in 2024: A Midyear Report.” The article reviews three key pieces of legislation passed in Connecticut in 2024 that will have a significant impact on businesses, homeowners, and the solar energy sector.

The first law expands paid sick leave to nearly all workers by 2027, requiring businesses to adjust to new compliance requirements. This law broadens the definition of eligible employees and expands permissible uses for sick leave. Lizz said, “It is important for Connecticut employers to begin compliance planning now so they are prepared to implement some of the more unusual aspects of the law.”

The second law bans unfair real estate listing agreements, specifically targeting contracts that restrict homeowners’ rights to sell or refinance their property. This law was influenced by investigations into predatory practices by companies like MV Realty and is designed to protect homeowners from long-term, restrictive agreements.

The third law promotes solar energy development by requiring towns to expedite the approval process for solar canopies and initiating studies on energy taxes and tariffs. This legislation aims to remove barriers to solar projects, helping Connecticut meet its climate goals, though some experts believe it only makes incremental progress in the state's renewable energy efforts.
