Dunkirk NRG Plant to be Recharged as Natural Gas Facility

On December 15, 2013, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that a $150 million agreement has been reached with NRG to repower and expand the Dunkirk Power Plant from coal to a 435 MW natural gas facility.  The Public Service Commission (PSC) has been assessing solutions for the future of the station on Lake Erie since 2012.

Under this agreement, NRG and National Grid agree that three coal units at the facility with a capacity of 435 MW will be repowered with natural gas. Currently only one 75 MW unit is operating on coal.  The conversion is expected to be completed by the fall of 2015. The agreement assures the operation of the plant for 10 years. The terms of the deal will be submitted to the PSC for final approval.
