Rosanna Berardi, immigration counsel at Barclay Damon and managing partner of Berardi Immigration Law, authored the Inc. magazine expert opinion article “Why Great Leaders Aren’t Always Available and What They Do Instead.” The article examined the hidden costs of constant availability and why effective leaders must set clear boundaries to support long-term success. Rosanna challenged the notion that responsiveness equates to strong leadership, noting that “constant availability isn’t leadership—it’s a slow, quiet erosion of your authority, your energy, and your team’s ability to think for themselves.”
Rosanna explained that over-availability can unintentionally weaken teams by discouraging independent problem-solving and creating reliance on leadership for routine decisions. She emphasized that “a team that can’t function without you is a liability, not a strength,” encouraging leaders to step back and allow employees to build confidence and critical thinking skills.
The article also offered practical strategies for setting boundaries without sacrificing trust, including clear communication templates for clients, colleagues, and team members; structured response windows; and dedicated time for deep work. Rosanna underscored the importance of framing boundaries as a way to improve the quality of engagement, not limit access, advising leaders to establish expectations early and implement systems that support both productivity and strong working relationships.
